At URBIS, Brněnské komunikace a.s. is presenting a unique scale model of Brno’s future southern district, including the planned new main railway station. According to the project team, this major investment will unlock the development potential of the city’s long-neglected southern area, paving the way for new construction projects and essential flood protection measures.
Built at a scale of 1:500 by the 3D Studio of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Brno University of Technology, the model is normally displayed on the ground floor of the Domini parking house and has been temporarily relocated to the exhibition. It offers visitors a clear visual representation of how the southern part of Brno is expected to evolve in the coming years.
“Given the capacity limitations of the current railway station and the planned development of the southern district, this is an absolutely crucial project for Brno. It will significantly accelerate the development of the city’s southern area,” said Dimitri Hospitis from the project preparation team.
Boulevard to the New Station Expected Within 18 Months
According to Hospitis, the new railway station is a necessary step both because of the capacity constraints of the existing station and the anticipated growth of the southern district. The project is expected to create new opportunities for housing, commercial development, and improved transport connections, while transforming an area that has long been overlooked.
Construction work is already progressing on site. The northern section of the new boulevard is currently under development. This main avenue will connect the future station entrance hall with Brno’s city centre, leading towards Petrov Hill. Completion of this section is expected in approximately 18 months.
Additional streets within the district are planned to follow, while the extension of Kalová Street in the Komárov area is scheduled for completion later this summer.
A Park the Size of Lužánky Will Bring Green Space and Flood Protection
A key part of the transformation will also be extensive flood protection measures and a strong emphasis on public green spaces. Another phase of flood protection works towards the Komárov area is set to begin early next year, including the construction of a large flood park.
The new district is also being designed according to blue-green infrastructure principles, incorporating rainwater retention and reuse systems to support urban greenery and improve climate resilience.
Together, these measures aim not only to protect the area from flooding but also to create a healthier, greener, and more sustainable urban environment for future residents and visitors.
