Brno introduces a Czech first: the country’s very first charging station hidden inside a streetlight pole

Teplárny Brno – a main URBIS partner – proves that clean mobility has a strong future. A quiet street in Brno has become the scene of a major innovation: the first-ever electric vehicle charging station in the Czech Republic fully integrated into a public lighting pole. The inconspicuous lamp post on Marie Majerová Street hides cutting-edge technology that redefines how cities can build infrastructure for clean and sustainable mobility.
The project was developed by the city-owned companies Teplárny Brno and Technické sítě Brno, in cooperation with inChaNet and Vysto Kobylí. The station will be operated by E-mobility Teplárny Brno.
Less visual clutter, more smart infrastructure
The integrated design brings both practicality and aesthetics. EV users can charge their vehicles without adding any new street furniture or disrupting public spaces.
“This pilot installation demonstrates how we can expand charging infrastructure without affecting the look of our streets. Its minimalist design creates almost no visual impact and provides 22 kW power, ideal for overnight charging,” explains Petr Beneš, Head of E-mobility at Teplárny Brno.
Cooperation between city companies as a key to innovation
The project is also an example of strong collaboration between Brno’s municipal companies.
“Zero-emission e-mobility is one of the transport forms that will develop rapidly in the coming years. Our goal is to make sure every city resident has access to a charger near their home. Using the existing public lighting network for this purpose is a smart and efficient solution,” says Markéta Vaňková, Mayor of Brno.
The idea was inspired by successful examples abroad, especially from the United Kingdom, where thousands of similar integrated charging stations are already in operation.
“Brno is positioning itself among Europe’s pioneers in smart infrastructure and showing the way forward for the development of electromobility in other Czech cities,” adds Jiří Herman, Chairman of the Board of Teplárny Brno.
Clean mobility – one of the key topics of URBIS
Clean and sustainable mobility will be one of the central themes of this year’s URBIS The Smart Cities Meetup – a leading Czech conference connecting cities, innovators, and businesses focused on smart urban development.
As a main partner of URBIS, Teplárny Brno will present its E-mobility projects and smart infrastructure solutions – including this unique, pole-integrated charging station.
