Marijke van Welzen creates wearable art that tells stories. Her colorful coats and jackets are created using an intuitive textile collage technique and captivate with their richness of detail, texture, and color. The DREAMCOATS collection presents textiles as a free medium full of imagination, experimentation, and personal expression.

Marijke van Welzen creates wearable art using techniques she has developed over the years. Not afraid of experimentation or a challenge, she produces unique art garments that explore a theme or tell a story. Textile is her passion, as it offers infinite possibilities of expression through its tactile qualities, flexibility, unlimited colour range, and rich visual texture.

She holds a BA in Textile Art and English and worked as a middle school teacher for 40 years. Marijke enjoys teaching and sharing the techniques she uses in her garments.

DREAMCOATS

Since 2000, Marijke has been creating wearable art. She particularly loves making coats that have a story to tell.

The colourful coats and jackets of Marijke van Welzen are true eye-catchers — viewers are immediately drawn in by their lavish decoration and richness of detail.

Marijke enjoys working around a theme. Her starting points may include fairy tales and stories, a country, flora and fauna, a specific piece of fabric, or a particular colour.

Her favourite technique is Textile Collage, and she works in an intuitive way. Starting with many tiny pieces of fabric, felt, yarn, and colourful machine threads, she “paints” her designs. She often combines this approach with surface design techniques such as stencilling, stamping, and needle felting.

Her work is constantly evolving as she discovers new images in her imagination and develops new techniques to translate them into cloth. Her coats and quilts travel to exhibitions all over the world.
