The Business Day of the Russian Federation took place with a larger participation of the Russian regions

The Business Day of the Russian Federation, which has traditionally been organized by the Chamber of commerce for economic relations with the CIS in co-operation with other institutions during the MSV in Brno, took place in a more optimistic spirit today than in recent years. There were several reasons for this – positive economic development in both countries, increasing imports and exports to the Russian Federation, interest of Russian regions in cooperation, confirmed personal attendance of representatives of several regions – Vladimir, Sverdlov, Nizhegorod, Ulyanov, Smolensk and Tatarstan and a filled-up hall of the Morava pavilion.

The business day touched on several areas related to business and investment activities in Russia. There were almost 30 presentations in the programme. Russian representatives presented the regions, talked about local industry, production potential, conditions for investors and opportunities for Czech companies. For example, Svetlana Juryevna Orlova of the Vladimir Region introduced an industrial area in the centre of Russia with 1.4 million inhabitants as a place where engineering, rails, lathes, glass and pharmaceuticals are being developed. She has also introduced several examples of cooperation with foreign companies, in producing as busses, electric motors or chocolate. She also mentioned the successful business relationships with the tractor manufacturer Zetor or Hamé. The seminar confirmed the emphasis on setting up joint ventures and the pressure to locate production in Russia.

Many of the participants, including the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Czech Republic, Alexander Vladimirovich Zmeyevski and the Czech Minister of Industry and Trade, Jiří Havlíček, positively evaluated the resumption of the Czech-Russian intergovernmental commission, which had met in Moscow this May. "I am glad that the commission will meet again at annual intervals and that we will continue the conversation in Prague next year," confirmed Minister Havlíček, who met the representatives of the Russian regions in the morning at the traditional breakfast before the Business Day itself.

"I am glad that many business guests from both countries have accepted the invitation to the Business Day. Twenty years ago, there was a lot of change on the market. But what does not change is our goal – to support businesses in their activities in Russia," said Jiří Demiš, Chairman of the Board of the Chamber for Economic Relations with the CIS. He also recalled the importance of business missions, which are one of the key areas of the chamber’s work. This year, three have been held in Russia, one under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture, two in cooperation with the Ministry of Industry and Trade. "In mid-October, a business mission will take place in the Siberian towns of Tyumen and Omsk, and in November the official visit of President Milos Zeman to Russia is expected. An accompanying business mission will be part of this visit. There is already great interest in this event," said Jiří Demiš.

"Every visit of the head of state opens a new stage in bilateral relations. I believe this will be the case here as well," confirmed Miloslav Stašek, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs at the meeting. He remarked that Russia is the 11th most important trading partner for the Czech Republic and holds the 2nd place among countries outside the EU. He also said that the Czech Republic has always had a very good name in Russia. "But it will not last forever. It is necessary not to lose existing contacts," added the Deputy Minister.
