The Import of Austrian machinery grows

Austrian suppliers of machinery and equipment exported 12 per cent more goods to the Czech market during the first half of this year than last year. The development of mutual trade and presentation of Austrian firms at MSV were the subject of our conversation with the Commercial Counsellor of the Austrian Embassy in Prague Christian Miller.

The Austrian exhibition in Hall V is already quite traditional. How many companies are attending this year and from which industries?
It is indeed a tradition, we have organized a group MSV stand for the fifth time. This time we have eleven companies, for example in the fields of industrial automation, transportation equipment, communications equipment, production of bearings and also vocational training. Visitors to the stand will see a practical demonstration of induction heating technology and also a modular "in motion" conveyor system. The offer of technologies, products and services is very wide indeed.

Yet Austrian participation certainly does not end with a group stand of at this year's MSV...
Of course not, and it must be said that the tradition of Austrian companies participating in this trade fair goes far beyond the five-year history of our common stand. One Austrian company - Pfeiffer Vakuum Austria - even belongs to those which have never missed MSV during its 56 years’ history. It is difficult to know exactly how many Austrian companies are exhibiting this year. I know that 25 exhibitors registered as Austrian, but also there are a lot of Austrian companies registered through their Czech subsidiary and another long line of companies that are represented at the stands of their local partners or Czech companies are exhibiting their products at their stands. When a person passes through the halls, one can get a picture of how far the Austrian, Czech and Slovak firms are linked.

How well are the Austrian manufacturers doing in finding their place on the Czech market?
Czech firms definitely have the most important market in Germany, and for Czech companies to produce for the German market, they need to deliver products of the highest quality. This can be achieved with Austrian technology and semi-finished products, which also show signs of the highest quality. I can say that truly unique Austrian companies are exhibiting here, whether they are manufacturers of machinery and equipment or their subcontractors. Czech manufacturers cooperate very well with these companies, which is also reflected in the foreign trade statistics. The most important commodities in Austrian exports to the Czech Republic are machines, equipment and vehicles. The value of these exports in the first half of this year reached € 1 billion, which represented 35 percent of total exports from Austria to the Czech market. The success of Czech firms on international markets is of course also reflected in the supply of Austrian goods. It is this segment that increased by 12 percent in the first half of 2014. I think it is a very good example of a close cooperation between Czech and Austrian companies.

How are these business relationships developing in the longer term? Did they manage to overcome the economic crisis that hit both countries?
Last year and the year before we recorded losses, because the austerity programme of the previous government influenced things. In the third and fourth quarter of 2013 there was economic growth which was connected with a growth of Austrian exports of products to the Czech Republic, but the first half of the year was poor and this load is reflected in the results for the full year. We can therefore expect really positive development only this year, when Austrian exports rose by 4 percent in the first half of 2014. I hope it will continue this way even further, yet since our two countries are very focused on export and we live in a joint international space, if I only looked at the Czech Republic and Austria, I would of course be extremely positive, but this way I hope the international situations will not shatter our hopes.

Thank you for the interview.
