International Engineering Fair

Business Day of the Russian Federation

The Rotunda of Hall A welcomed the distinguished guests who visited the Business Day of the Russian Federation. Among them, there was the ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Czech Republic Sergei Borisovich Kiselev, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to the Russian Federation Vladimír Remek, Czech Minister of Industry and Trade Jan Mládek and many others. The Business Day of the Russian Federation, a traditional event organized on the occasion of the International Engineering Fair by the Chamber for Economic Relations with the CIS, brought a summary of the current state of economic and trade relations between the Czech Republic and Russia and gave an opportunity to representatives of Russian regions, associations, organizations and businesses to present themselves.

All speakers agreed at the outset that the meeting was taking place at a time that does not embody the best of times  for trade between the two countries. Minister Mládek mentioned several statistical numbers that speak of a decline in exports by 33%, imports by 18% and turnover by 25%. The primary reason was, in his words, the fall in oil prices. "It is unpleasant and we try to do our best to maintain the trade with Russia," said Minister Mládek. Vladimír Remek said that even so we remain on the 6th place among the countries of the European Union in exports to Russia, and from this perspective we belong to the top even in the current difficult conditions. He also cited several examples of successful cooperation, such as the opening of a new Volkswagen engine production plant in Kaluga or the participation of Czech builders in the construction of an airport terminal in Nizhny Novgorod. The Ambassador of the Russian Federation Sergey Borisovich Kiselev mentioned in his speech the meeting between Presidents Putin and Zeman and also underlined the importance of trade missions. There have been two this year, in the words of Chairman of the Chamber for Economic Relations with the CIS Jiří Demiš – in May to Nizhny Novgorod and to Yekaterinburg in July.

Minister Mládek also praised the regional cooperation with Russian regions and highlighted the participation of their representatives at the fair in Brno, when he spoke, for example, about export and investment opportunities in the Sverdlovsk region, Yaroslavl region, Pskov region, Ulyanovsk region, the Samara region and the Republic of Tatarstan." I am pleased by the participation of businessmen and representatives of the regions, which confirms the huge interest in mutually beneficial cooperation," said Minister Mládek. In his speech he stressed the importance of the engineering fair, which was attended by the Czech government and president Zeman, he also spoke about the current challenges, such as the status of Czech technical education, lack of skilled labour in technical professions, and little progress in the implementation of scientific and research findings into practice and generally in the economy. Finally, he spoke about the concept of Industry 4.0, which became a challenge and a topic not only for the fair, but also for the development of industrial production in the future.
