International Engineering Fair

Seven MSV Gold Medals were awarded at the opening of the fair

The Rotunda of Hall A filled to the last place was the setting for a traditional ceremony, during which six exhibitors were honoured for their exceptional exhibits. The seventh Gold medal was, as in previous years, awarded to a prominent personality of Czechoslovak industry.

The MSV Gold Medal competition is organised by the Confederation of Industry of the Czech Republic and the Brno University of Technology. There was great interest in participating in the competition this year and exhibitors registered 32 innovative exhibits, whose quality was assessed by an expert committee. MSV Gold Medals 2016 were awarded in six categories and representatives of successful companies have received them from the president of Confederation of Industry Jaroslav Hanák, Minister of Industry and Trade Jan Mládek, rector of Brno Petr Štěpánek and CEO of Brno Trade Fairs, Jiří Kuliš.

The seventh MSV Gold Medal 2016 was awarded for lifelong creative technical work and innovative achievements. The laureate was Professor Armin Delong, a world-renowned physicist and founder of electron microscopy in Czechoslovakia. Prof. Ing. Armin Delong, DrSc., started focusing on the production of electron microscopes as a student of electrical engineering at the Technical University of Dr. Edvard Benes in Brno. He participated in the construction of the first Czechoslovak electron microscope and on the basis of these works, the Institute of Scientific Instruments CSAV was established in Brno. The company Tesla subsequently introduced the production of electron microscopes as one of its key activities and in 1958 Armin Delong won a gold medal at the EXPO world exhibition for his prototype of a desktop electron microscope. Professor Delong served as director of the institute for more than 30 years, was vice-chairman of CSAV after November 1989 and also Deputy Prime Minister of the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic for scientific and technological development. In 2005, was awarded the „Czech Head“ Lifetime Scientific Achievement Award for the development of electron microscopy in Czechoslovakia and transfer of know-how from the sector to industrial applications. The 91-years-old doyen of electron microscopy received the MSV Gold Medal 2016 through his daughter.
