The Army will buy 3D radars alone, the Visegrad countries project fell through

The Ministry of Defence has decided to purchase the MADR mobile 3D radars through a tender.  The Czech defence industry should be involved in the contract, as the Ministry spokesman Petr Medek announced on Tuesday. Thus the possibility of joint procurement within the Visegrad Four (V4) is not materialize.

"The Ministry of Defence has decided on the method of acquisition of MADR mobile 3D radars through an open tender. Given the importance of the contract for state defence, the contractor must be firmly anchored in the Czech Republic, therefore the Ministry will insist on the involvement of the domestic defence industry," said the resort.

Five radars should be procured by 2017 to replace obsolete Soviet radars. They should be delivered within 18 to 24 months after signing the contract. It is expected that the acquisition price will vary in the amount of about 1.5 to 1.7 billion CZK.

The V4 states at least agreed on a uniform system specification. " This specifically means that individual parties may acquire radar systems to the same specification, albeit in different numbers and dates according to their abilities and needs," explained the resort, while the joint acquisition is prevented by many problems of mainly legislative character.

Thanks to an agreement on the specification of the radar the V4 countries could jointly deploy this technology within NATO in the future. They could also cooperate in the preparation and training of professional and technical staff.
