Brief characteristics of the exhibit

An effective approach to lightweighting engineering structures, while improving their dynamic properties and reducing the amount of energy required for their operation is the integration of multiple high-tech features into a single product. An example of this approach is the production of a hollow shaft of ultrahigh-strength steel made by a unique quenching and partitioning (Q&P) process. The process delivers products with the ultimate strength of more than 2000 MPa, elongation of 10 % and fatigue strength of 1300 MPa. The shaft was made by internal high pressure forming at a temperature of approximately 900 °C, using gas at a gauge pressure of 800 bar. The contact with the die wall caused controlled cooling of the steel workpiece which thus became a complex-shape product. This step was followed by controlled heat treatment in order to obtain a product with exceptional mechanical properties. This product and the entire manufacturing process from the basic research stage up to the product realization were developed in the Czech Republic and implemented in collaboration with a number of foreign partners.
