Medical Fair Brno / Rehaprotex
18.-21.10. 2011
International Fair for Medical Technology, Rehabilitation and Healthcare
A three-day surgical congress has excellent representation
The Supporting Programme of the Medical Fair / Rehaprotex 2011 had already begun by the 6th International Congress of Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery, which is associated with the 5th Congress of interactive wound healing. The speakers include Professor Feza Remzi of the American Cleveland Clinic and prof. Franca Melfi of Pisa – a European guru of robotic surgery.
Three lectures were heard during the opening ceremony of the congress. MEP Evžen Tošenovský
focused in his Masaryk lecture on
difficult issues discussed in the European Parliament and among other things, stated that the current problem of government deficits in Greece and other countries is so great that his
solution will require very capable
"surgeons". He stressed that the problems of financing health care are currently dealt with not only in the Czech Republic but everywhere, except that they have a European dimension
at the European level. In
conclusion, he wished the
audience to have the congress shift
their much needed skills and knowledge back
a little further.
Petřivalský’s lecture "From Prometheus to the multimodal treatment of liver," was presented by the President of the Czech Surgical Society ČLS JEP, prof. Miroslav Ryska. He emphasized the ability of liver regeneration, which was already captured in the Greek mythology and after a historical excursion, and an overview of the current state things he focused mostly on underused liver resection in the treatment of cancer. He showed that statistically, liver resection significantly prolongs lives of patients in advanced / metastatic stage, but in the Czech Republic, this procedure is indicated only approximately to one fifth of those in need. He also underlined the need for a multidisciplinary approach and personalized medicine.
The main guest at the opening ceremony of the congress prof. Feza Remzi, head surgeon of the colorectal department of the renowned Cleveland Clinic, is one of the world's most renowned colorectal surgeons. In the Peano lecture he celebrated tremendous progress, which surgery has undergone especially in the last sixty years, and through an interesting visual documentation he recalled the milestones in the areas of anaesthesia, antisepsis, surgical techniques and other detail. He focused in detail on progress in the surgical treatment of carcinoma of the colon and rectum. In conclusion he presented the history of the Cleveland Clinic founded in 1921, and the colorectal department, where approximately 4 500 surgical procedures are now annually performed. His farewell message to listeners was "Act as a unit." Prof. Feza Remzi also lectured during the congress expert programme – the colorectal section - on the topic "How colorectal surgeons in the United States differ from the general surgeons".
The Congress of Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery is primarily focused on modern technology and its use in current surgery which is very important nowadays. In comparison with previous years, this meeting has a broader scope and beside surgeons it also addresses general practitioners. One of the symposia on "Preoperative and Postoperative Care in the Outpatient General Practice" tackles problems of coordination between physician and surgeon, especially in elderly patients. A traditional and important part of the congress features a practical course in minimally invasive colon resection, there will also be a satellite teaching symposium for medical students at MU on "Simulation in Surgery Teaching". The actual surgeons’ meetings focus on topics in the fields of oncological surgery, gastrointestinal surgery and thoracic surgery, traumatology is a separate program block. Again, there is also a nurse section, a section for young doctors and satellite symposia of partner companies, Johnson & Johnson, B. Braun Medical and Merck Sharp & Dohme.
